Merle 'Claw' Clawson
Claw started flying over the Hawaiian Islands in 1974 following four years in the United States Navy. After obtaining his commercial pilot’s license he began flying the eight island tour and realized he loved both the flying and introducing people to the wonders of his new home.
Subsequently he flew for a local airline called Mid Pacific Air where for eight years he ferried people to the outer islands of Maui, Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai & Molokai. He then moved to Europe for a two year stint with Sabena Airlines.
There was also that short eighteen years he and his family sailed their 38' sailboat around the world, but ultimately it was back to the islands he loved so much.
Between jobs, and when money ran out on the sailboat, Claw always ended up on the North Shore flying tourists from around the world. Over the past thirty+ years he has logged over 25,000 hrs of flight time and thousands of skydives. He is also the mechanic for much of the aircraft at Dillingham airfield where you will be flying, having earned the highest mechanic's license from the FAA: Inspector Authorization. Claw has flown a wide variety of aircraft including Jets, Gliders, Helicopters, and both acrobatic airplanes and acrobatic gliders.
Claw owns, flies, and maintains the Grob 109 you will be flying on your tour. As stated earlier he has flown extensively around these islands and has an intimate knowledge of the beaches, valleys and historic sites. Having kissed the Blarney Stone on more than one occasion, Claw has been blessed with the “Gift of the Gab” and will captivate and delight you on your aerial tour.
THE BEST HIGH IN HAWAII ®
Your flight will be an original glider ride, soaring Hawaii in the most unforgettable way. From Kaena Point to Makapu’U, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and Waikiki, you will see it all on the ‘Wings of the Wind’
